Snow leopard cub rescued from a home in Gilgit-Baltistan

A snow leopard cub, just two-and-a-half months old, has been rescued from a private residence in Gilgit-Baltistan, leading to the arrest of three individuals involved in its illegal possession.

The operation was conducted as a joint effort by the Wildlife Department and the Parks Department.

Officials reported that the cub had been sold illegally for 250,000 rupees, highlighting the ongoing issues related to wildlife trafficking in the region. The cub was located in Naz Bar Nala, situated in the Yasin Valley of Gilgit, where authorities were alerted to the illegal sale.

Following its rescue, the cub was transported to a rehabilitation camp for snow leopards in the Naltar Valley, where it will receive the necessary care and attention.

The three individuals connected to the incident are now in custody, facing legal consequences for their actions.

This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced protection measures for endangered species like the snow leopard, which is already facing threats from habitat loss and poaching.

Conservation efforts are crucial not only for the survival of these majestic animals but also for maintaining the ecological balance in their natural habitats.

Wildlife officials have reiterated their commitment to combating wildlife trafficking and ensuring the safety of vulnerable species. The successful rescue of the cub serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration among various agencies in protecting wildlife and enforcing laws against illegal trade.

Authorities are now calling for increased public awareness about the illegal wildlife trade and its impacts, urging communities to report any suspicious activities that could threaten endangered species.
