Sindh to Provide 2.1 Million Free Homes and Electric Scooters to Women

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced a major initiative to construct 2.1 million free homes, with ownership granted exclusively to women, in an effort to empower women and promote family stability, according to Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

Speaking at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the Sindh Transport Department and KFC Pakistan, Memon said the project is part of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s broader agenda to uplift women through housing, transport, and economic empowerment.

Empowering Women Through Ownership

“These homes are being registered in the names of women to strengthen their social standing and ensure long-term security for families,” Memon explained. The housing scheme is one of the largest of its kind in the province and reflects a continued commitment to gender-focused development.

Free Electric Scooters and the Pink Bus Service

Building on the success of the Pink Bus Service—a women-only public transport initiative—the minister announced that the government will now distribute free pink electric scooters to women across Sindh.

“Every year, thousands of women will receive scooters to help them travel independently and safely,” Memon said, adding that over 8,000 applications have already been received.

Free Driving Lessons and Licenses

In a further boost to mobility, free driving training and licenses are being provided. So far, 144 women have been issued driving licenses, and the number is expected to rise quickly. Transport Secretary Riza Pir confirmed that the government is covering both training and licensing costs to remove financial barriers.

Commitment to Women’s Rights

“We are removing every obstacle that prevents women from being mobile, independent, and financially empowered,” Memon said, adding that the PPP has a proud history of supporting women’s rights—from issuing CNICs to securing voting rights.

“This initiative is an extension of that legacy. We are committed to continuing this progress and ensuring women are front and center in Sindh’s development journey,” he concluded.
