Shehbaz Sharif
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s President-elect, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on July 30 in Tehran.
The announcement was made by Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch during her weekly press briefing on Thursday.
Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon and reformist, secured his position as the new president in a runoff election held earlier this month.
This election was conducted ahead of schedule following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May of this year.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Tehran comes at the invitation of Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
This visit underscores the commitment of both Pakistan and Iran to deepen leadership-level engagement and enhance bilateral cooperation.
An Iranian official informed IRNA that the inauguration ceremony will see attendance from officials representing 60 different countries.
Among the attendees are expected to be four sitting presidents, twelve parliamentary speakers, seven prime ministers, three vice presidents, and two deputy prime ministers.
Prior to this, on July 8, PM Shehbaz Sharif reached out to Dr. Pezeshkian via telephone to offer his congratulations on his election victory.
During their conversation, the leaders discussed potential avenues for increased cooperation, especially in areas such as trade, commerce, and investment.
They also explored ways to bolster their partnership to contribute to regional stability.
PM Shehbaz expressed his eagerness to work closely with President-elect Dr. Pezeshkian to further strengthen the bilateral ties between Pakistan and Iran.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring a prosperous future for both nations through mutually beneficial cooperation.
Additionally, former President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his congratulations to Dr. Pezeshkian.
In his message, Zardari highlighted the historic and friendly ties between Pakistan and Iran and expressed hope that these relations would continue to grow stronger under Pezeshkian’s leadership. He looked forward to collaborating on initiatives for regional peace and prosperity.
