ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) issued a contempt of court notice to Malik Luqman Ali Afzal, the owner of Monal Restaurant, situated in Margalla Hills. The restaurant is a popular dining destination in Islamabad, renowned for its breathtaking views and diverse menu.
During a hearing regarding commercial activities at Margalla Hills National Park, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa noted that the restaurant owner had previously assured the court of its closure, yet he is now allegedly engaging in “propaganda” against justice on television. The Chief Justice questioned why Ali Afzal did not appear before the court today, adding that he should provide employment opportunities for the staff of Monal Restaurant at his other establishments.
The Director General of Galyat and the landowner, Malik Siddique, also appeared before the SC bench. When questioned, Captain (Retd.) Siddique Anwar apologized to the court, stating he had no intention of constructing anything on the land he acquired at Margalla Hills.
CJP Isa inquired whether Siddique was still serving in the Pakistan Army and why he had not indicated his retired status after his rank. Siddique Anwar replied that he retired from the army in 1999 with a salary of Rs 7,000.
The Chief Justice then questioned how he could afford to purchase land valued at Rs 350 million with such a salary. Siddique explained, “I sold my land in my village to buy the land from the Nawab of Khanpur,” adding, “I wanted to develop Margalla Hills.”
Justice Isa responded, “You are ruining Margalla Hills; leave it alone.”
Following the issuance of the contempt notice to the Monal Restaurant owner, the SC adjourned the hearing.
A recent post on Monal’s social media confirmed its upcoming closure. “It’s time to say goodbye. As per the Honorable SCP directions, we are closing on 11/09/2024,” the post stated.
