Peshawar Residents Face Increased Roti Prices Amid Rising Inflation
Residents of Peshawar are experiencing another financial strain as inflation continues to impact everyday items. The district administration has announced a Rs5 increase in the price of roti, as detailed in a notification from the deputy commissioner of Peshawar.
Under the new rates, a 125-gram roti will now cost Rs20, up from the previous price of Rs15 for a 120-gram roti. This adjustment has been implemented immediately across the district.
The district administration stated that the price hike was made based on the recommendations of the Price Review Committee, which attributed the increase to the rising cost of flour. The price of an 80kg bag of flour has surged from Rs7,000 to Rs8,900, necessitating the price adjustment.
Local naanbai have expressed concerns that even with the new prices, they are still operating at a loss due to the soaring costs of ingredients. “Despite the price increase, we are still struggling with losses,” said one tandoor owner, emphasizing the ongoing difficulties in the sector.
Recently, Peshawar also saw a rise in live chicken prices, with the cost reaching Rs440 per kilogram. This increase has led to a significant drop in sales, as many consumers find it difficult to afford this staple food item. Shopkeepers reported a sharp decline in sales, with only hotel owners continuing to purchase chicken in bulk. “Due to inflation, buying chicken has become unaffordable for ordinary citizens,” noted a local shopkeeper.
