Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday commended the Punjab police for successfully neutralizing 10 terrorists in a joint intelligence-based operation conducted by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Mianwali police.
The operation, which took place in Mianwali, targeted a group of terrorists who posed a significant threat to the region.
In a statement released by Punjab police on October 24, it was detailed that the CTD, in collaboration with Mianwali police, had launched an operation based on intelligence reports. These reports indicated that a group of 10 to 15 terrorists was hiding in the hilly areas under the jurisdiction of Makkarwal Police Station.
Responding to the information, the police force mobilized swiftly, leading to a joint operation that included personnel from both the local Mianwali police and the elite force.
The operation was led by Mianwali District Police Officer (DPO) Akhtar Farooq, who directed the mission to target the terrorists. During the exchange of gunfire, 10 Khawarij — a term referring to extremists outcast from society — were killed, marking a significant success in counterterrorism efforts.
The operation’s success was seen as a major victory in the ongoing fight against terrorism, especially in a region that has seen increasing terrorist activities.
Following the successful operation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation for the timely and efficient action taken by the Punjab police.
In a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, he praised the police and security forces for their bravery and effective strategy, which resulted in the elimination of the terrorists without any reported losses on the side of law enforcement.
“The entire nation feels proud of its brave policemen,” the prime minister remarked, highlighting the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country. He reiterated that the fight against terrorism would continue until the country is completely free of such threats.
This operation comes against the backdrop of increasing terrorist attacks in Pakistan. In July, the government issued an official notification designating the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as Fitna al-Khawarij, a term implying rebellion and extremism.
The government also mandated that all institutions refer to terrorists as “Khariji,” or outcasts, a move aimed at undermining the legitimacy of their actions and ideology.
According to data from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), an Islamabad-based think tank, Pakistan experienced a significant uptick in terrorist activities.
In August alone, there were 59 reported terrorist attacks across the country, a noticeable increase from the 38 attacks that took place in July. The operation in Mianwali is part of a broader effort by Pakistan’s security forces to tackle this growing threat.
Earlier in September, the Punjab CTD had already taken proactive measures in the fight against terrorism, arresting nine terrorists from banned organizations during 71 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the province.
These ongoing efforts underscore the government’s commitment to combating extremism and ensuring the security and stability of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s praise of the Mianwali operation reflects the government’s resolve in continuing its campaign against terrorism and its dedication to the safety and security of its citizens.
