Thousands of mourners across Pakistan observed the 9th of Muharram on Saturday with processions and majalis held peacefully under a blanket of tight security. The day marked solemn tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions for their ultimate sacrifice at Karbala.
Over 2,763 processions and 7,598 majalis were conducted across Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), with local and federal authorities deploying extensive resources to ensure order and safety.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, overseeing the operations alongside Minister of State Tallal Chaudhry and Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, stated:
“Maintaining law and order is the top priority during Muharram. Ashura will remain peaceful through the tireless dedication of our security forces.”

Special Measures & Monitoring
Authorities declared 1,129 locations as highly sensitive, monitoring them round-the-clock via CCTV and drone surveillance.
For the first time in Islamabad, a mobile control room, capable of functioning without mobile signals, was deployed to oversee Ashura activities. A central monitoring cell at the federal level remains operational 24/7 in coordination with provincial authorities.
All security arrangements were developed in consultation with provincial governments, and a zero-tolerance policy has been adopted against hate speech or sectarian incitement—especially on social media.
Minister Naqvi warned:
“Religious incitement on social media will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
As Muharram observances continue, officials remain vigilant to ensure peace and harmony throughout the sacred period.
