Pakistan Railways Achieves Record Rs. 70 Billion Revenue Despite Financial Challenges

Pakistan Railways

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has achieved an unprecedented earning of over Rs. 70 billion by May in the fiscal year 2023-24, despite facing significant financial challenges due to monsoon season floods.

Sources in the Ministry informed that the department is optimistic about generating up to Rs. 80 billion in revenue by the end of this financial year, attributing this success to the relentless efforts and hard work of Railway workers.

This marks a historic increase in revenue for Pakistan Railways, as the department earned approximately Rs. 40 billion in the previous financial year (2022-23).

The sources elaborated that the Rs. 70 billion revenue came from both passenger and freight trains, along with contributions from other sectors within the department.

Currently, Pakistan Railways is operating around 96 passenger trains, an increase from the 86 trains running last year. Additionally, the average number of freight trains has doubled from 3.75 last year to seven this year.

The department also reported that the issue of delayed salary payments to employees has been resolved. It anticipates further improvements once the Mainline-I (ML-I) project commences.

In response to a question, the sources confirmed that Pakistan Railways has enhanced its precautionary measures to reduce passenger train accidents.

Over the past three months, only six minor accidents, none resulting in casualties, have occurred across the entire railway network.

This significant reduction in accidents is attributed to efforts to minimize trespassing at unmanned level crossings and unauthorized locations.

Continuous monitoring of railway tracks and thorough inspections of trains are being carried out, as passenger safety remains the department’s top priority, according to the sources.
