Pakistan Post
LAHORE: On Monday, it was revealed that Pakistan Post has suspended parcel bookings for the United States for a month, resulting in significant financial losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the country.
This suspension has had a substantial impact, disrupting trade and e-commerce operations that relied on Pakistan Post for shipping goods to the US.
The suspension has led to the cancellation of numerous orders that were sent through e-commerce platforms, as the closure of bookings has left many transactions unresolved.
This disruption is not only affecting the trade of Pakistani products in the US but also denting the national exchequer, as it hampers the inflow of revenue from exports.
According to sources within Pakistan Post, the primary reason for halting the parcel service is the non-payment of compensation to American shipping companies.
This financial issue has compounded the problem, leading to the suspension of service. Additionally, the Pakistan Post has cited issues with parcel packing as another reason for the service disruption.
An inquiry report from the Directorate General of Pakistan Post has identified several operational flaws contributing to the problem. These include deficiencies and missing Electronic Advanced Data (EAD), as well as incorrect classification of letter mail.
The report highlighted that small-sized registered letters were being sent to the US without proper ITMATT messages, or with faulty or incomplete ITMATT messages, which caused errors and led to the rejection of mail by the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Furthermore, the booking staff was found to have filled in incorrect information in the mandatory fields, further complicating the issue.
The suspension has prompted small businessmen and e-commerce sellers to call on the government to address the situation promptly.
They have urged that measures be taken to ensure the resumption of parcel deliveries to the US through Pakistan Post, as the current halt is significantly impacting their operations and business prospects.
In contrast, Pakistan Post continues to accept bookings for parcels and mail to the United Kingdom and other countries, indicating that the issues are specific to the service for the US.
The ongoing challenges underscore the need for improvements in operational procedures and financial management to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
