ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart Omar Ayub has been officially designated as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, as confirmed by the lower house secretariat on Tuesday.
The announcement came after NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq completed the necessary procedures to appoint the opposition leader, ratifying Ayub’s request following a meeting between the two.
During the meeting, opposition members Gohar Ali Khan and Malik Amir Dogar were also present, engaging in discussions regarding Ayub’s nomination as the opposition leader.
In a tweet, the NA secretariat stated, “The speaker of the National Assembly declares Omar Ayub the Leader of the Opposition after the completion of the scrutiny process under Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the National Assembly.”
Ayub’s nomination was proposed by a majority of the opposition, with the deadline for submission of nomination papers being April 1, 2024. According to the NA, no other candidate’s papers were received by the stipulated time.
The PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) alliance had initially nominated Ayub for the position on March 10, with the submission of the plea to the speaker’s office being supported by signatures from 92 SIC lawmakers, including figures like Malik Amir Dogar, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Ali Muhammad Khan, Riaz Fatiana, and Dr. Nisar Jat.
Ayub’s appointment as the Leader of the Opposition marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s political landscape and is expected to bring about changes in parliamentary dynamics as the PTI continues its role in the opposition.
