LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered the removal of Lieutenant General Munir Afsar from his position as Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by citizen Ashba Kamran, who challenged the legality of his appointment.
The case questioned the overall appointment process for the NADRA chairman.
After hearing the arguments, the LHC ruled in favor of the petitioner, Ashba Kamran, and declared Lt. General Afsar’s appointment invalid.
Earlier, in October 2023, the federal cabinet approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Munir Afsar as the new chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Monday, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The PMO made the announcement via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that cabinet members had approved Afsar’s appointment after considering three candidates nominated by the Ministry of Interior.
The Ministry of Interior also issued an official notification, making the appointment effective immediately.
Gen Afsar, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in October 2022, succeeds Asad Rehman Gilani, who took over in June following the resignation of former chairman Tariq Malik.
