KARACHI: The University of Karachi has awarded an honorary doctorate degree (honoris causa) to renowned Islamic scholar and speaker Dr. Zakir Naik during a special convocation ceremony held at the Sindh Governor’s House, as reported by The News on Thursday.

The honorary degree was conferred by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, who also serves as the chancellor of the university. In his remarks, Governor Tessori emphasized that the degree recognizes Dr. Naik’s significant contributions to Islam. This accolade coincides with Dr. Naik’s visit to Pakistan as a state guest, having been invited by the government.

During his stay, which will last until October 28, Dr. Naik is scheduled to hold public gatherings in several cities. He has already met with senior government officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and has addressed gatherings in Karachi. Upcoming events include speeches in Lahore on October 12-13 and in Islamabad on October 19-20.

At the convocation ceremony, Governor Tessori praised Dr. Naik for his extensive participation in debates on various Islamic topics. He expressed hope that Dr. Naik would continue his mission to promote Islam with dedication and commitment.

The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including consul generals from different countries, Dr. Tariq Rafi, chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, KU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi, Mufi Abdul Rahim, and senior faculty members.

The conferral of the honorary degree follows a special meeting of the Syndicate of the University of Karachi, which approved the honorary Doctor of Philosophy in the university’s Faculty of Islamic Studies, as noted in the statement issued by the university. This recognition reflects Dr. Naik’s influence and contributions to Islamic scholarship.
