The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has unveiled an initiative to construct 1,000 homes for families displaced by the devastating floods in Pakistan during 2022. This significant project aims to “rebuild communities and foster resilience,” as stated in an announcement made on Wednesday.
Out of the planned homes, 590 will be built in Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), while 410 will be located in the Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan districts of Punjab.
Each house will consist of two rooms, a kitchen, and a washroom, providing safe and permanent housing for approximately 7,000 individuals affected by last year’s catastrophic monsoon floods.
“KSrelief has announced a major initiative to build 1,000 permanent houses for families in K-P and Punjab who were displaced by the devastating 2022 floods,” the organization highlighted. KSrelief, known for having one of the largest humanitarian budgets globally, operates in over 80 countries, with Pakistan being the fifth largest recipient of its aid.
The agreement for this housing initiative was finalized earlier in October between Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and KSrelief, marking a crucial step in ongoing post-flood recovery efforts. This initiative is part of a wider series of public facilitation projects launched by KSrelief to support communities affected by the floods.
Pakistan is among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, and last year’s floods, triggered by unusually heavy rainfall, resulted in the deaths of over 1,700 people and economic losses estimated at $30 billion. This year, additional monsoon-related floods and landslides led to nearly 250 more fatalities in K-P and Punjab.
The project underscores KSrelief’s commitment to aiding Pakistan’s recovery and improving the long-term well-being of affected communities.
