KARACHI: Public transport in Karachi will face partial suspension from the 8th to 10th of Muharram due to heightened security during Ashura, officials announced Friday.
The BRT Green Line service will remain completely suspended on July 4, 5, and 6 (corresponding to Muharram 8, 9, and 10), according to a spokesperson for the service.
Additionally, seven out of ten routes of the Peoples Bus Service will be closed on Muharram 9 and 10, while five routes will experience partial disruptions on Muharram 8.
To manage Ashura processions and ensure public safety, Karachi Traffic Police have issued a detailed traffic diversion plan.
MA Jinnah Road will be closed from Guru Mandir to Tower, and commuters are advised to use alternative routes:
- From Nazimabad: Use Lasbela Chowk through the Garden area to reach Nishtar Park.
- From Liaquatabad: Take a right at Teen Hatti, then proceed via Martin Road.
- From Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi: Use Kashmir Road under Jail Flyover to Shahrah-e-Quaideen or take Jail Flyover to Teen Hatti and Nishtar Road via Lasbela.
The federal government has already declared July 5 and 6 as public holidays in observance of Youm-e-Ashura.
Muharram, one of Islam’s four sacred months, holds immense religious significance. On the 10th day, Ashura, Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala.
Across Pakistan, large processions and religious gatherings (majalis) are held under strict security protocols during these days.
