Congratulations
The presidents of Iran and Turkey extend warm congratulations to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Shehbaz Sharif on his re-election as the country’s prime minister.
In a telephonic conversation, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed optimism about deepening relations between Ankara and Islamabad during Shehbaz’s new term. The leaders discussed various facets of Turkey-Pakistan relations, as well as regional and global issues.
Similarly, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi conveyed his felicitations to Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening the bonds between the two Islamic brotherly nations.
President Raisi expressed hope that the new government, under Shehbaz’s leadership, would exert maximum efforts for the welfare of the people and the country. Both leaders affirmed their dedication to working collaboratively to enhance bilateral relations.
The National Assembly’s election saw Shehbaz Sharif secure the position of the 24th elected prime minister, obtaining 201 votes with the support of his party and seven other allies, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and National Party (NP). His opponent, Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Omar Ayub Khan, garnered only 92 votes.
This marks Shehbaz’s second consecutive term as prime minister. The newly-elected premier is set to take the oath today, continuing his political journey that began with his election as Pakistan’s 23rd premier in 2022.
In addition, his dedication to governance and collaborative efforts with various parties signal a period of political stability and cooperation in Pakistan.
