Honda Atlas Cars and Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC), two major auto manufacturers in Pakistan, have announced the temporary shutdown of their production plants due to an ongoing shortage of essential raw materials. The scheduled shutdowns are as followed:
- PSMC: The automobile plant will shut down from October 25, 2023, to October 27, 2023, while the motorcycle plant will continue its operations.
- Honda Atlas Cars: The company’s plant will close from October 24, 2023, to October 31, 2023.
This situation in the automotive industry reflects a broader issue that has been affecting Pakistan’s automobile sector for over a year. Shortages in inventory levels have led to a cycle of temporary shutdowns across the industry. The Indus Motor Company Limited (IMC) recently extended this impact by announcing a month-long shutdown of its production plant.

The scarcity of foreign exchange reserves in Pakistan is primarily responsible for the ongoing shortage of essential raw materials. This challenge has made it difficult to open letters of credit (LCs), hindering the import of crucial components. As a result, the entire supply chain, from automobile manufacturers to their suppliers, is facing severe disruptions, necessitating temporary production halts.
Moreover, the temporary shutdowns of Honda Atlas Cars and PSMC highlight the urgent need to address supply chain issues to ensure stability and productivity in Pakistan’s automotive sector. Collaborative efforts involving stakeholders and the government are essential to identify the root causes and establish long-term solutions. Furthermore, swift action and cooperative strategies are crucial to mitigate disruptions and promote a robust and resilient automotive industry.
