RAWALPINDI — The funeral prayer of Major Syed Muiz Abbas Shah, a celebrated officer of the Pakistan Army, was offered with full military honors at Chaklala Garrison on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The solemn ceremony was attended by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, senior military officers, civil officials, and fellow soldiers. Field Marshal Munir paid glowing tribute to the martyred officer, calling him a symbol of courage and patriotism who “resisted the enemy with exceptional bravery.”
Major Muiz Abbas Shah was martyred in South Waziristan during a high-stakes intelligence-based operation against Indian-backed Khawarij militants. According to ISPR, the operation in the Sararogha area resulted in the elimination of 11 militants and injuries to seven others. However, during the fierce firefight, two soldiers — Major Muiz Abbas Shah and Lance Naik Jabranullah — laid down their lives for the nation.
Major Muiz, aged 37 and a native of Chakwal, had served in the army for 14 years. He gained widespread recognition in February 2019 when he confronted and secured the surrender of Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman after the latter’s aircraft was shot down during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Recalling the moment in a past account, Major Muiz had said:
“As soon as I approached him, he looked at my rank and said, ‘Captain, I am Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, and I surrender. Please save me.’ I ensured his safety as my professional duty.”
Major Muiz leaves behind a grieving wife and two young sons. His legacy of valor and professionalism will continue to inspire generations of soldiers.
Lance Naik Jabranullah, a 27-year-old from Bannu, had served the army for eight years. He is survived by his wife and three children. His bravery in the line of duty has also been acknowledged as an enduring example of devotion to Pakistan.
The President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi extended heartfelt condolences and paid tribute to the fallen heroes. They praised the successful operation and reaffirmed the government’s full support for the security forces.
“The sacrifices of these soldiers and their families are a source of immense national pride. Their martyrdom will not go in vain,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a statement. “The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with its armed forces in safeguarding the sovereignty and peace of Pakistan.”
Security forces remain determined to root out terrorism from every corner of the country and uphold Pakistan’s status as a cradle of peace.
