A senior Hamas official has stated that the recent Gaza ceasefire talks in Doha failed to uphold the July 2 agreement based on US President Joe Biden’s proposal. According to the official, who spoke to Anadolu Agency on Friday, the discussions in Doha did not include a commitment to the previously agreed terms.
Hamas had initially refused to participate in the talks, insisting that Tel Aviv comply with the July agreements supported by Biden, as reported by Israeli media. The official mentioned that the information relayed to Hamas from the Doha meetings did not reflect adherence to the prior agreement.
Additionally, a Palestinian source revealed that the new proposal discussed in Doha did not address the status of the Netzarim Crossing or the Philadelphi Corridor. The source noted that there is only a verbal commitment from the US to pressure Israel regarding Netzarim, with the Philadelphi Corridor issue expected to be discussed in Cairo next week.
Earlier, the US, Egypt, and Qatar had announced a joint statement presenting Israel and Hamas with a “bridging proposal” aimed at narrowing the remaining gaps to facilitate a swift implementation of the Gaza ceasefire deal. The statement described the Doha discussions as “serious and constructive” and conducted in a “positive atmosphere.”
