Crisis Management Unit
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has activated its Crisis Management Unit (CMU) to support and assist Pakistani nationals in Syria amid the escalating law and order challenges and the ongoing crisis in the war-torn country.
The situation in Syria has grown increasingly unstable following a recent rebel offensive, with major developments signaling a dramatic shift in the balance of power.
According to a Syrian officer, the Syrian army command informed its officers this morning that President Bashar al-Assad’s rule has effectively ended following a rapid and lightning offensive by rebels.
This significant political and military development comes as reports suggest that Assad has fled Damascus for an unknown destination.
Senior army officials disclosed this information to Reuters, with witnesses noting that the rebels have entered the Syrian capital without any signs of organized military resistance.
Witnesses in Damascus reported thousands of civilians gathering in the main squares waving their hands and chanting “Freedom.”
Some participants celebrated what they described as the release of prisoners and the end of injustice, particularly referring to Sednaya prison.
These developments have caused widespread uncertainty as the region braces for further political upheaval.
The head of the main Syrian opposition group abroad, Hadi al-Bahra, declared on Sunday that Damascus is now effectively “without Bashar al-Assad.”
This marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s protracted civil conflict, with repercussions likely to affect both the government and opposition dynamics.
In light of these developments, the Foreign Office (FO) has urged all Pakistani nationals currently in Syria and their families to contact the Crisis Management Unit at the designated contact information provided by the government: telephone number 051-9207887 or via email at [email protected].
Additionally, the Pakistan Embassy in Damascus continues to actively support Pakistani citizens in Syria. The contact details for the Embassy are as follows: mobile phone/WhatsApp at +963 987 127 822 and +963 990 138 972, as well as via email at [email protected].
Furthermore, the FO has emphasized the importance of caution for those already in Syria. On December 6, the Ministry explicitly advised Pakistani nationals to avoid unnecessary travel to the country until the situation stabilizes.
This advisory comes amid fears of violence and instability. The FO has further urged those already residing in Syria to exercise extreme caution and maintain regular communication with the Embassy in Damascus to ensure their safety.
The deteriorating law and order in Syria have added significant strain for residents and foreign nationals alike. The CMU and diplomatic missions are working to mitigate risks for Pakistani nationals as the political landscape in Damascus continues to shift amid the growing rebel advances.
