The new United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for five years was signed by the Pakistani government on Tuesday (2023-2027).
Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary Economic Affairs Division, signed on behalf of the Pakistani government, while Julien Harneis, Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator, signed on behalf of the UN.
Niaz welcomed the UN Coordinator and expressed gratitude for the UN’s contribution to creating the first-ever UNSDCF (2023-27) for Pakistan’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He said that the UNSDCF and the federal and provincial governments have the same priorities.
“Pakistan is appreciative of the UN’s cooperation in achieving the SDGs and for its ongoing assistance with flood relief and rescue efforts. In order to promote national development priorities and the living standards of Pakistanis, the Pakistani government is committed to cooperating with the United Nations there, Niaz said.
According to Harneis, a year-long, cross-country consultation process involving the executive branch and technical line ministries, resident and non-resident UN agencies, and domestic and international civil society organisations produced the collaboration framework.
He promised Pakistan that the UN will continue to support it as it started working to achieve the requirements and commitments outlined in the framework.
The UNSDCF for Pakistan advances five priority outcomes and will be implemented from January 2023 to December 2027. These outcomes are basic social services; gender equality and women’s empowerment; climate change and the environment; sustainable inclusive economic growth and decent work; and governance.
