27th Constitutional Amendment
Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazir Tarar, categorically dismissed any rumors or speculation surrounding the introduction of the 27th constitutional amendment.
Speaking during an interview, he stated, “The 27th constitutional amendment is merely speculation at this time. There are no new constitutional amendments in the pipeline.” His comments aimed to reassure the public and clarify the government’s position regarding constitutional changes.
Tarar emphasized the government’s dedication to implementing the recently approved 26th constitutional amendment, asserting that its effective execution will bring about positive outcomes for the nation.
“The 26th constitutional amendment has been enacted, and its implementation is our focus,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of this amendment in strengthening the country’s constitutional framework.
In related developments, the government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has opted to retain a special parliamentary committee tasked with overseeing discussions on potential constitutional amendments and ensuring parliamentary stability.
Sources close to the government revealed that any future decisions regarding proposed amendments, including the 27th, will ultimately be determined by this parliamentary committee.
This body has been granted the authority to finalize any proposed changes, reflecting the government’s intent to maintain a structured approach to constitutional matters.
The government also aims to engage all political parties in discussions about constitutional issues, fostering an inclusive dialogue.
Ongoing consultations among coalition partners, particularly the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), are expected to continue.
These discussions are intended to build a consensus across the political spectrum, ensuring that any amendments reflect the collective interests of all parties involved.
In a related context, the coalition government plans to address concerns regarding the arrests of members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The parliamentary committee will also be responsible for submitting a comprehensive report on this matter, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Significant political discussions occurred recently between PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, covering various constitutional and governance issues, including the proposed 27th constitutional amendment.
One of the key outcomes from their meeting was the decision to expedite a bill aimed at increasing the number of Supreme Court judges. This bill is anticipated to be tabled in parliament imminently and is expected to gain approval within a few days.
Additionally, discussions included the implementation of the newly approved 26th constitutional amendment, with a focus on establishing mechanisms for the formation of constitutional benches at both federal and provincial levels.
The leaders agreed that formal meetings would be convened to discuss these mechanisms further.
Moreover, the meeting also addressed the pending bill regarding the municipal powers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which has now been referred to the relevant committee for additional deliberation.
The leaders also took the time to review the status of agreements between the PPP and PML-N concerning various issues in Punjab, including the release of funds and the allocation of administrative positions, to ensure effective governance within the province.
