Defense Minister Calls for Enhanced Security Measures in National Assembly Premises

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Defense Khawaja Muhammad Asif emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive security measures within the premises of the National Assembly (NA) building and its surrounding areas during a session on Friday.

Addressing the National Assembly floor, the minister highlighted the presence of a large number of unidentified individuals at the building’s entrance, corridors, and near elevators, posing potential security risks.

Asif stressed the importance of reinstating a stringent pass issuance system for Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) to ensure the security of the Parliament. He emphasized that such measures are crucial to prevent unauthorized access and ensure that only authorized personnel are present within the parliamentary precincts.

He underscored the significance of heightened security protocols in light of recent security threats, citing the Bisham suicide attack on March 26, where an explosive-laden car targeted a bus carrying Chinese workers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust security measures to safeguard against potential threats.

Additionally, Asif expressed concern over disruptive behavior from individuals seated in the gallery, urging an end to slogan chanting that undermines the sanctity of the House. He emphasized that decorum and respect for parliamentary proceedings are essential for upholding the dignity of the institution.

Asif reiterated that the National Assembly is not a venue for protests or demonstrations and called for adherence to decorum and parliamentary etiquette. He emphasized the need for all individuals present within the parliamentary premises to respect the rules and regulations governing conduct during parliamentary sessions.

In response, NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq informed the assembly that verbal instructions had been previously issued, followed by written directives on May 14, to enhance security measures. He highlighted the presence of guests from the Senate and assured that random security checks are being conducted to maintain safety.

Sadiq assured members that necessary measures have been implemented to safeguard the Parliament, including discussions with Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi and the Inspector General of Islamabad police to address security concerns effectively. The safety and security of all individuals within the parliamentary precincts remain a top priority for the government.
