Damage to underwater cables could affect internet services in Pakistan: PTA

A breakdown in the international underwater cables system near Abu Talat in Egypt could result in difficulties for consumers in accessing internet services, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA).

According to the PTA, Trans World Associates (TWA) has reported a slowdown in services from Europe in international connectivity to the SEAMEWE5 cable system.

This slowdown in internet service delivery is due to a malfunction in the underwater cable system.

Egypt is working with its international counterparts to fix the problem as soon as possible.

The number of cables connecting Pakistan to the outside world through internet is 6, two have been mentioned above, while the other four include TW1, SEMEWE3, SEMEWE5 and AAE1.

Of these, SEMEWE3 operates in a limited capacity, while the other 2 were installed only a few years ago.
