From Gold Medals to Daily Wage Labour
National medallist Rizwan Pathan is now working as a labourer in a marble factory. The talented athlete once represented his region in martial arts and gymnastics. Today, he works long hours in Nowshera to support his family.
Pathan belongs to Bajaur District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He won a gold medal at the 2018 national martial arts championships. He also secured medals at several provincial and local competitions.
Despite his achievements, financial hardship forced him to step away from competitive sport. He says a lack of funds ended his training and tournament participation. His dream of representing Pakistan at the international level now faces uncertainty.
Pathan shared that his passion for sports began after watching a gymnastics video in Mardan. He developed a strong interest in gymnastics. However, the sport required expensive training and equipment. Due to limited resources, he shifted to martial arts.
He quickly rose through the ranks. He earned recognition at national level events. His medals once symbolized hope and pride for his community. Now, those same medals hang beside him as he works in a marble factory.
Financial Struggles Halt Promising Career
Pathan says poverty in his area has worsened over the years. His family faces serious financial difficulties. He had no choice but to take up daily wage labour.
He works to provide basic necessities for his household. He balances physical labour with fading hopes of returning to sport. He says the biggest obstacle is financial support. Training, travel, and equipment all require funding.
Many talented athletes in remote regions face similar challenges. They lack sponsorship and institutional backing. Without financial aid, their careers often end prematurely.
Pathan says he never wanted to leave sports. He wanted to continue training and competing. But survival came first. Supporting his family became his top priority.
Appeal for Support to Represent Pakistan
Despite the setbacks, Pathan has not given up on his dream. He still hopes to represent Pakistan on the international stage. He believes he has the talent and determination to succeed.
He has appealed for government and private sector support. He is seeking sponsorship to resume professional training. He says proper backing could transform his future.
โIf I am supported, I will become the best player and make Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan proud,โ he said.
His story highlights the struggles faced by athletes in underprivileged areas. Talent alone is not enough without financial stability. Many promising careers fade due to lack of resources.
Rizwan Pathanโs journey from national medallist to factory worker is both inspiring and heartbreaking. His determination remains strong. But his future in sports now depends on support from institutions and sponsors willing to invest in talent.
