ISLAMABAD: In the wake of the tragic murder of TikToker Sana Yousaf, Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued a safety advisory for digital content creators, highlighting growing concerns over the security of public figures in the online space.
The advisory, directed at TikTokers, vloggers, influencers, and bloggers, urges digital creators to exercise caution and take proactive steps to protect both their digital and physical presence. It warns that the online sharing of personal opinions, lifestyle details, or identity can make creators vulnerable to real-world threats.
“Maintaining a secure, responsible, and positive digital presence is essential, especially for individuals with public-facing platforms,” the advisory stated. It stressed the need for creators to adopt cybersecurity best practices, limit the disclosure of personal information, and remain vigilant about potential online harassment or stalking.
The advisory reflects a broader concern over the safety of content creators in Pakistan, particularly women, as the digital environment becomes increasingly polarized and, at times, hostile.
The murder of Sana Yousaf, who had a growing following on TikTok, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection measures for those in the digital community. Advocacy groups and civil society organizations have urged authorities to take concrete steps to address the increasing risks faced by influencers and public figures online.
National CERT concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to supporting the safety and security of Pakistan’s digital community and encouraged content creators to report any threats or suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
