KARACHI: The convenor central committee of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan took a decisive step on Thursday by expelling party founder Altaf Hussain from its basic membership for life. The decision followed a detailed internal review and marks a significant development in the partyโs organisational and political direction.
According to media reports, the meeting of the convenor central committee took place at MQM-Pakistanโs temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad. MQM-P Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui chaired the session, which focused on examining alleged violations of organisational discipline and the party constitution. Party leaders discussed the matter at length before reaching a unanimous conclusion.
Review of violations and committee decision
During the meeting, the central committee conducted a comprehensive review of what it described as serious breaches of party discipline. Members assessed actions and statements attributed to Altaf Hussain in light of MQM-Pakistanโs constitution and internal rules. Following these deliberations, the committee concluded that the violations were grave and incompatible with the partyโs principles.
As a result, the convenor central committee unanimously decided to expel Altaf Hussain from the partyโs basic membership for life. The decision, according to the committee, reflects a firm stance on maintaining organisational discipline and ensuring adherence to party rules. Furthermore, the committee stated that the expulsion would take immediate effect, leaving no ambiguity about its implementation.
Party stance on democracy and national interest
In an official statement released after the meeting, the central committee reaffirmed that MQM-Pakistan functions as a constitutional and democratic political party. It reiterated its commitment to pursuing politics within the framework of Pakistanโs constitution and in the national interest. The statement emphasized that the party prioritises democratic norms, rule-based decision-making, and institutional integrity.
Moreover, the committee made it clear that no individual, regardless of past status or influence, would be allowed to act against party policy or organisational discipline. It also stressed that any action perceived as harmful to the state of Pakistan would not be tolerated. Therefore, the leadership underscored that loyalty to the partyโs principles and the country remains non-negotiable.
Political observers view the move as a defining moment for MQM-Pakistan as it seeks to distance itself from controversies linked to its past leadership. Consequently, the decision is expected to have implications for the partyโs internal cohesion and its public image. For now, MQM-Pakistan leadership appears focused on projecting unity, constitutionalism, and a forward-looking political agenda.
