ISLAMABAD: According to NordPass’s annual list of the world’s most commonly used passwords, many users’ approaches to password security remain largely unchanged. Most people still prefer simple, convenient passwords over complex, creative ones.
For example, users often rely on easily accessible keys like “123456789” or “qwerty,” choosing straightforward patterns rather than unique combinations, as noted by The Verge.
When setting up personal passwords, many users focus on completing the process quickly rather than considering the risk of a potential data breach. They often prioritize speed over security, ignoring the possibility of cyberattacks.
NordPass’s list of the most commonly used passwords is based on a 2.5TB database compiled from “publicly available resources,” including some from the Dark Web.
If your password appears on this list, it may be time to consider a change. Here are the top 10 most common passwords:
- 123456
- 123456789
- 12345678
- password
- qwerty123
- qwerty1
- 111111
- 12345
- secret
- 123123
NordPass has released this list five out of the past six years, with “password” consistently ranking among the top choices. Other frequently used passwords include simple patterns like ABCs, numbers, and “Qwerty.”
Additionally, some users set passwords inspired by their favorite games, characters, or brands, like “minecraft,” “pokemon,” or “samsung.” However, NordPass warns that such simple passwords can be cracked by malicious actors in seconds.
