The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted further rainfall in Karachi today (Sunday) following three days of light to moderate showers across the city.
While the relief from extreme heat was initially welcomed by residents, the ongoing monsoon spell has turned deadly, resulting in at least eight deaths and seven injuries over the past two days.
Rescue teams reported that two peopleโa father and his daughterโwere killed in a roof collapse in Lyari, which also left five others injured. In a separate incident, a child died and a father and son sustained injuries when their house roof collapsed in Manzoor Colony.
Additionally, five people have died in electrocution incidents across different parts of Karachi. Victims include a 40-year-old man named Gulfam in New Karachi Sector 11-J, a 22-year-old man in Golimar, 21-year-old Ahmed in Surjani Town, and 17-year-old Mudassir in Korangi.
The Met Office forecasts partly cloudy skies for Karachi today, with chances of further rain and drizzle. Temperatures could rise to around 32 degrees Celsius, accompanied by 83% humidity and winds blowing at 11 km/h from the northeast.
Looking ahead, the PMD has indicated a second spell of monsoon rains is expected to begin nationwide from July 5.
Nationwide, recent torrential rains and flash floods have caused widespread devastation, claiming at least 40 livesโincluding 18 childrenโover the past few days. According to reports, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone has lost 19 people, with 13 fatalities in Swat district.
In Punjab, heavy downpours since Wednesday have killed 15 people, including eight children who died in roof and wall collapses.
The PMD has cautioned that the threat of further heavy rainfall and flash flooding will persist until at least Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authorityโs National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued alerts for multiple regions, warning of risks such as urban flooding, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and other rain-related hazards.
Balochistan has also been affected by fresh monsoon showers, which have lashed northern and central areas, leading to more rain-related incidents.
