A Landmark Achievement for Pakistani Cinema
Moklani – The Last Mohanas has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Pakistani film to win at the prestigious Jackson Wild Media Awards. This global recognition highlights not only the excellence of Pakistani filmmaking but also the urgency of environmental and cultural preservation.
The Jackson Wild Media Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of natural history filmmaking,” celebrate outstanding contributions to nature, science, and conservation storytelling. The 2025 ceremony was held at the Center for the Arts in Jackson, Wyoming, where winners were selected from a record number of submissions.
Recognition in the Global Voices Category
The film secured the award in the Global Voices Category, a segment dedicated to stories amplifying underrepresented perspectives worldwide. From over 500 entries and 1,000 hours of media reviewed by more than 200 international judges, Moklani emerged as a powerful voice. Its success reflects the rising importance of climate and cultural narratives from Pakistan on the global stage.
Story of the Mohana Community
Directed and produced by renowned filmmaker Jawad Sharif, the documentary explores the life of the Mohana community of Manchar Lake. The Mohanas, often known as “boat people,” are indigenous fisherfolk who have sustained their lives on water for centuries.
However, their centuries-old way of life now stands at risk. Declining water levels, toxic pollution, and diminishing fish stocks threaten their survival. At the same time, their cultural identity is fading, leaving them vulnerable to extinction.
Through stunning visuals and deeply human storytelling, Moklani captures the Mohanas’ struggle against environmental degradation and social neglect. The film places their plight in the broader context of climate change, connecting local realities with global challenges.
Collaboration and Support
Produced under Jawad Sharif Films, the project received support from the National Geographic Society and Climate Kahani. This collaboration enabled the documentary to bring international attention to the Mohana community while underlining Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate disruption.
According to Sharif, the recognition belongs to the Mohana people themselves. He emphasized that their resilience and dignity, despite mounting challenges, carry lessons for the world.
Importance of Global Recognition
The award win for Moklani – The Last Mohanas marks a turning point for Pakistani cinema. It demonstrates that stories rooted in indigenous experiences and climate realities can resonate worldwide. Furthermore, it establishes Pakistan as a strong contributor to environmental and cultural documentary filmmaking.
The Jackson Wild Media Awards stand as one of the highest honors in the field, honoring films that not only entertain but also educate and inspire. By achieving this recognition, Moklani amplifies a powerful message: preserving both nature and culture is essential for sustainable futures.
