ISLAMABAD: In the ongoing World Cup, Mitchell Santner, the unassuming New Zealand cricketer, has emerged as a crucial asset for the Kiwi team as he prepares for his 100th ODI against Australia on Saturday.
The 31-year-old left-arm spinner carries high expectations due to his consistent performance in the tournament.

Santner has proven his mettle with 12 wickets in five matches, just one wicket behind Australia’s Adam Zampa. His ability to control runs while taking regular wickets has established him as a valuable asset on India’s slow and turning pitches. With an impressive economy rate of 4.25, Santner ranks second only to India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who boasts an economy rate of 3.80.
New Zealand’s stand-in skipper, Tom Latham, has expressed unwavering confidence in Santner’s abilities. He cited Santner’s consistent performances in both one-day and T20 cricket, along with his IPL experience with the Chennai Super Kings, as factors that make him a reliable player for the Kiwi team. Santner’s versatility in various bowling situations and his skill in spinning the ball on diverse surfaces have solidified his position in the team.
Since his debut in 2015, Santner has consistently delivered, amassing 103 wickets in 99 ODI matches. He has played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s World Cup campaigns, despite experiencing heartbreak in various finals and semis. Notably, he earned praise from legendary left-arm spinner Bishan Bedi, who likened him to New Zealand’s spin great Daniel Vettori. Interestingly, Vettori serves as the spin bowling coach for the Australian team in the upcoming match.
Santner, known for his determination and grit, contributes in the lower order with the bat, holding a test hundred and boasting an average of over 28, including three half-centuries. His standout performance in the current World Cup occurred against the Netherlands, where he played an unbeaten 36 off 17 balls and returned with impressive figures of 5-59. Mitchell Santner’s all-round abilities establish him as a formidable force in the world of cricket.
