Mitchell Marsh will retire from Sheffield Shield cricket at the conclusion of the current domestic season, bringing to an end a long association with Western Australia in the countryโs premier first-class competition. The 34-year-old informed his WA teammates of his decision following their recent match against Victoria.
Despite stepping away from Shield cricket, Marsh has not ruled out future involvement at the international level and remains available for Test selection should the opportunity arise. His most recent Test appearance came against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2024.
Reflecting on his decision, Marsh said representing Western Australia had been a defining part of his career. He described it as an honour to play Sheffield Shield cricket for WA and reaffirmed his strong commitment to the team and to the Perth Scorchers in domestic limited-overs competitions. Marsh added that he intended to continue contributing to WA cricket in various capacities in the years ahead.
Marsh had been briefly discussed as a potential Test recall earlier in the summer, but Australiaโs settled combination has made his return unlikely. With the team leading the Ashes series, captain Pat Cummins back from injury, Cameron Green established as the seam-bowling allrounder and Beau Webster waiting for an opportunity, competition for places remains intense.
Over the course of his Sheffield Shield career, Marsh played 55 matches for Western Australia, scoring 2,744 runs and claiming 82 wickets. He also captained the side in 16 matches between 2017 and 2023, providing leadership during a successful period for the state team.
Western Australia head coach Adam Voges paid tribute to Marshโs impact, saying he epitomised what it meant to represent the state in Shield cricket. Voges praised Marshโs commitment, character and growth from a domestic player into an established international cricketer, describing it as a privilege to witness and be part of his journey.
Marshโs retirement from the Shield marks the end of a significant chapter in WA cricket, even as his broader playing career continues.
