Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has continued the franchise’s tradition of strong box office performance, but it now faces a significant challenge that could break a streak nearly three decades long.
Despite its massive $400 million production budget, the eighth installment in the long-running action series has earned a solid $588 million globally and holds an impressive 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Still, the financial results may not be enough to keep the film in the top 10 of 2025’s worldwide box office—a position every Mission: Impossible movie has claimed since the franchise began in 1996.
Currently ranked sixth among the year’s highest-grossing films, The Final Reckoning has just been overtaken by Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake.
While it is now the fourth-highest grossing entry in the Mission: Impossible series, surpassing Dead Reckoning’s $565 million, it remains behind Rogue Nation ($682M), Ghost Protocol ($694M), and Fallout ($791M). The film is expected to cross the $600 million mark, but with several major blockbusters yet to release, its position is in jeopardy.
The rest of 2025’s release calendar includes high-profile titles like Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Wicked: For Good, and Zootopia 2—each with strong box office potential. If these films perform as expected, The Final Reckoning could find itself pushed out of the top 10 entirely, possibly finishing the year in 11th place.
Such a result would mark a first for the franchise. Since its debut in 1996, every Mission: Impossible film has ended its release year among the global box office’s top 10. Even Dead Reckoning, which underperformed relative to expectations, barely held on to 10th place in 2023, edging out The Little Mermaid by just $2 million.
With Tom Cruise possibly making his final appearance as Ethan Hunt, The Final Reckoning was expected to be a box office juggernaut. While its performance is far from a failure, the fierce competition of 2025 may force the film to end the year without continuing the franchise’s remarkable top-10 streak—a streak that has lasted 29 years.
