Novelist, actor, and outspoken feminist Mira Sethi has reaffirmed that she does not work with problematic individuals. During a talk in August with author Muneeb Qadir, she revealed that she declined a major role in ARY Digital’s Main Manto Nahi Hoon. Sethi said she made the decision because of the misogynistic views expressed by the show’s writer, Khalilur Rehman Qamar.
A video of the discussion was recently shared on social media by Qadir, reigniting debate among fans and industry watchers. In the clip, Sethi explained that she was initially thrilled about the project and eager to collaborate again with Humayun Saeed and Sajal Ali. However, she ultimately refused the role because she believed her vocal feminism would lose credibility if she worked with someone “who said such strange things about women.”
A Role with Prominence and Controversy
The role Sethi declined was significant. She was offered the character of Miss Maria, a close friend and confidante of the main character, Manto, played by Humayun Saeed. The role was later given to Sanam Saeed, who admitted in an earlier interview that she had initial concerns about the drama. Despite those doubts, she accepted the project, promising herself to challenge anything conflicting with her values.
The series soon faced criticism for its tone and dialogue. One of its early episodes featured a fat-shaming joke that triggered backlash on social media. Many fans expressed disappointment at Sajal Ali’s involvement in the scene, although they were unsurprised by Qamar’s controversial writing.
Qamar’s Long History of Misogyny
Mira Sethi’s refusal aligns with her firm stance on women’s rights and gender equality. Her decision reflects an unwillingness to compromise her beliefs for career advancement. Khalilur Rehman Qamar has long faced criticism for his offensive comments about women and feminism. He insulted activist Marvi Sirmed on live television and once blamed feminism for the brutal murder of Noor Mukadam.
Sethi Stands by Her Feminist Values
In previous statements, Sethi remarked that Qamar has “done a disservice to himself” by becoming a “cheerleader for ugly conservative thoughts.” She said he has exposed his regressive mindset, revealing beliefs she finds “deeply ugly.”
Her choice to reject the drama underscores her commitment to integrity and responsible representation. By refusing the role, Sethi demonstrated that women in media must draw clear lines against misogyny, regardless of fame or opportunity.
