The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert warning of rain, snowfall, and a sharp intensification of cold conditions across several parts of the country in the coming days.
According to the Met Office, rain and snowfall are expected on January 30 and 31 in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The department further warned that a widespread cold wave is likely to intensify from February 1 to February 3, affecting most parts of the country.
In Balochistan, rain is forecast in Quetta, Ziarat, Qila Saifullah, Zhob, Noshki, and Chaman, while snowfall is expected in the surrounding mountainous regions. The PMD also cautioned that severe cold conditions and heavy snowfall are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, where temperatures are expected to drop significantly.
The Met Office warned that snowfall may make roads slippery and increase the risk of landslides in hilly and mountainous areas. Travelers heading to northern and upper regions have been strongly advised to take precautionary measures, check road conditions in advance, and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather.
In addition, the PMD noted that cold weather could result in dense fog in plains and valleys, leading to reduced visibility and potential disruptions to road traffic and air travel. Relevant departments, including district administrations, rescue services, and highway authorities, have been directed to remain on high alert to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
The PMD urged the public to stay informed through official weather updates and advisories, particularly residents of cold-prone and mountainous areas. Citizens were also advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, livestock, and crops from extreme cold.
The Met Office said it will continue to closely monitor the evolving weather system and issue further updates as required to ensure public safety and preparedness during the ongoing winter spell.
