Anil Methania, an 18-year-old first-year medical student at GMERS Medical College in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, has tragically died after an alleged raging incident.
According to reports, Methania was forced by senior students to stand for three hours during what was described as an “introduction” exercise—a term often associated with raging. He collapsed after the ordeal and was rushed to a hospital, where he later passed away.
Methania’s family, informed of his hospitalization only after the incident, expressed their shock and demanded justice. His cousin, Dharmendra, shared the family’s grief and determination to seek accountability.
College dean Hardik Shah confirmed that Methania had reported the ragging incident to the police before his death.
Authorities have since registered an accidental death case and conducted an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death. Senior police officer KK Pandya revealed that Methania’s father has filed a formal complaint, and 15 senior students have been named in the FIR.
Ragging is strictly banned by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in India, which mandates severe consequences for those involved in such activities on campus. This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of eradicating the dangerous practice from educational institutions.
