ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is all set to launch the first electric bus service in Rawalpindi next week, marking a major step toward sustainable and modern urban transportation in the province.
According to official sources, the Rawalpindi administration has already received 45 electric buses, while charging stations are currently being installed across key city locations. Once fully operational, the city will have a fleet of 85 electric buses, all dedicated to serving commuters within Rawalpindi.
Green Mobility Initiative by the Punjab Government
The initiative, spearheaded by the Transport and Mass Transit Department of Punjab, aims to reduce air pollution and fuel dependency while improving public transport accessibility. Officials confirmed that the first electric bus route will be launched by mid-October 2025, with the Chief Minister expected to inaugurate the service in a formal ceremony.
This project is part of Punjab’s broader vision to promote clean and energy-efficient transport solutions across major cities. It represents an important milestone in the government’s climate-friendly infrastructure agenda.
Infrastructure Development Underway
A consignment of 45 new electric buses has already arrived in Pakistan, ready to be deployed for city operations. Meanwhile, construction of electric charging stations and parking facilities is in progress at Saddar and Peshawar Road depots. These facilities will support daily operations and ensure efficient maintenance of the electric fleet.
Authorities are also developing a digital monitoring system to track routes, optimize energy consumption, and improve passenger convenience. The service is expected to significantly reduce the city’s carbon footprint while providing a cleaner and quieter travel experience.
Cleaner, Smarter Transport Future for Rawalpindi
With the launch of the electric bus service, Rawalpindi will become one of the first cities in Punjab to adopt a zero-emission transport network. The initiative not only supports environmental protection but also sets the stage for modern, tech-enabled commuting options for thousands of passengers daily.
