Actor Mark Ruffalo has issued a passionate call for urgent action after the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared a famine in Gaza. The declaration confirmed that more than half a million people in Gaza City and surrounding areas are now facing extreme food shortages, with the crisis expected to expand further by September.
Ruffalo Speaks Out
In a fiery Instagram video, Ruffalo directly addressed world leaders, demanding immediate intervention. “This is not a natural disaster. It’s not a drought. It’s a man-made disaster, a criminal act against civilian populations. And it’s being perpetrated by Israel and the IDF,” he said. He emphasized that Israel controls vast food supplies on one side of the border, while the people of Gaza are left with nothing.
Ruffalo called for an immediate ceasefire and for the killing of children to stop. He directly addressed global leaders, shouting, “President Trump, DO SOMETHING! Germany, DO SOMETHING! Europe, DO SOMETHING! UK, DO SOMETHING!” He urged international authorities to speak out and prevent further suffering.
Social Media Solidarity
Singer Billie Eilish has also voiced her support for Palestinians, sharing posts and stories highlighting the humanitarian crisis. The two artists’ advocacy has drawn attention, but it has also provoked threats. Disturbing online images have surfaced, allegedly showing Israeli missiles marked with Ruffalo and Eilish’s names, targeting them for speaking out.
Previously, both Ruffalo and Eilish wore red Artists4Ceasefire pins at the Oscars, signaling solidarity with Palestinian civilians. Their efforts aim to raise awareness about the man-made famine and its devastating impact on vulnerable populations.
IPC Declaration and Humanitarian Crisis
The IPC classification highlights the severity of the crisis in Gaza, with more than 500,000 people already starving and thousands at risk of death. By the end of September, central and southern Gaza may face similar conditions, potentially affecting over three-quarters of the population. Another 1.7 million people remain in emergency conditions, struggling with hunger, disease, and lack of essential supplies.
The IPC described the famine as entirely man-made, a direct result of Israel’s blockade on food, medicine, and humanitarian aid. While Israel has dismissed the IPC findings, calling them “Hamas lies,” international humanitarian organizations stress the urgent need for relief and accountability.
Ruffalo’s Message to the World
In his Instagram caption, Ruffalo highlighted the moral responsibility of global leaders: “What we’re witnessing in Gaza is not just a tragedy, it is a crime against humanity. Forced starvation, a man-made famine, children and families wasting away while the world looks on in silence.” He concluded with a plea: “Raise your voices. Demand an end to this famine. Demand an end to the genocide and destruction. Demand accountability. Demand life.”
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has intensified, with international actors now under increasing pressure to respond. Public figures like Ruffalo and Eilish are using their platforms to amplify on-the-ground voices, urging governments and organizations to act swiftly before the crisis worsens.
