Before the 2026 Grammys kick off on Sunday, Feb. 1, Mariah Carey was honored as MusiCaresโ Person of the Year at a star-studded gala on Friday, Jan. 30, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The event celebrated Carey, 56, for her extraordinary achievements in music and her philanthropic contributions. Careyโs red carpet appearance alone turned heads: she wore a sheer floral gown with a corseted bodice and long train, paired with a sparkling diamond collar necklace, layered bracelets, and dangling earrings. The singerโs glam look set the tone for an unforgettable evening.
During her remarks, Carey reflected on the honor, saying, โStanding here tonight surrounded by so many friendly and familiar faces โ people Iโve worked with, people Iโve long admired, and even people I thought Iโd never see again โ [there’s] so much love, so much music, itโs overwhelming in the best possible way. It really is unbelievable.โ
She continued, โReceiving this honor is one of the most profound moments of my life and career, and thatโs kind of a big deal. When you look at the list of artists who have been named Person of the Year before me: legends, icons, my own heroes. To be included in that list is just beyond.โ
Past MusiCares honorees include Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, and Fleetwood Mac. In 2025, The Grateful Dead were also recognized.
The evening featured performances of Careyโs iconic hits. John Legend performed โHero,โ Kesha sang โObsessed,โ and Billy Porter took on โAlways Be My Baby.โ Carey joined several performers for a festive rendition of her holiday classic, โAll I Want for Christmas Is You.โ
Mariah Carey was celebrated not just for her musical impact but also for her philanthropic efforts. MusiCares cited her โextraordinary creative achievements and dedication to philanthropic causes, while raising vital funds to support the health and well-being of the music community.โ Throughout her career, Carey has championed causes ranging from human rights to education.
During the galaโs auction, fans and fellow artists competed for a range of Carey memorabilia. Legend, 47, was notably outbid while attempting to secure a Carey-signed art piece and one of her past outfits, highlighting the ongoing enthusiasm and admiration for the singer.
The honor underscores Careyโs enduring influence in the music world as she heads into another Grammys season, cementing her legacy as the Songbird Supreme.
