Breakthrough at Shams-1 Well in Ghotki District
Mari Energies Ltd. has announced a major gas and condensate discovery at its Shams-1 exploratory well in Sindh, Pakistan. The company shared the development through a formal filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
The Shams-1 well is located within the Mari Development and Production Lease (D&PL) area in Ghotki district. It was spudded on January 30 and drilled to a total depth of 3,075 meters. This milestone confirms the wellโs potential as a significant addition to Pakistanโs domestic energy resources.
During testing, Shams-1 flowed at a rate of 47.98 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, alongside 64 barrels per day of condensate. The well recorded a stabilized wellhead flowing pressure of 2,404 psig, indicating a strong reservoir performance.
Mari Energies operates the block with a 100% working interest, giving the company full operational and commercial control over the field. This latest discovery is seen as a key step in addressing Pakistanโs long-standing natural gas shortages and energy security concerns.
Geological Insights and Hydrocarbon Potential
The discovery was made in the Lower Goru-B sand formation, which is recognized as a key hydrocarbon-bearing zone in the Sindh region. This formation has historically delivered significant gas reserves in Pakistan. Experts suggest that the Shams-1 find may help stabilize domestic gas supply and reduce reliance on imported fuels.
The Lower Goru-B formation is part of the larger Goru geological sequence, known for high-quality hydrocarbon reservoirs. Mari Energiesโ geological team confirmed the wellโs productivity and the high-quality condensate output, which adds value to the field and contributes to energy diversification in the country.
Strategic Importance for Pakistanโs Energy Sector
Pakistan has been facing persistent gas shortages, particularly during peak winter months. The Shams-1 discovery is expected to strengthen domestic energy supplies and support industrial and household demand.
Mari Energiesโ CEO stated that the company is committed to rapid development of the field to bring the gas and condensate into production. The discovery also reinforces Sindh provinceโs role as a hub for hydrocarbon exploration and production in Pakistan.
Energy analysts say that discoveries like Shams-1 can boost investor confidence in Pakistanโs upstream energy sector. The find highlights the potential of untapped reserves in the Mari D&PL block and demonstrates the technical expertise of Mari Energies in deep drilling and reservoir management.
Next Steps and Outlook
Mari Energies will now conduct further testing and engineering studies to determine optimal production strategies. Infrastructure development, including pipelines and processing facilities, will be prioritized to ensure timely delivery of gas and condensate to the market.
The Shams-1 discovery aligns with Pakistanโs long-term energy strategy of maximizing domestic production, reducing imports, and achieving energy self-sufficiency. With continuous exploration and advanced drilling techniques, Mari Energies is positioned to play a leading role in the countryโs energy future.
