TikTok video helps Punjab Wildlife Department track down suspect involved in animal cruelty
The Punjab Wildlife Department has arrested a man for allegedly throwing a pangolin into floodwaters in Nullah Dek, near Narowal. The arrest was made after a video of the incident surfaced on TikTok, prompting public outrage and leading authorities to identify and locate the individual.
The suspect was apprehended at Ahmedabad Fort in Narowal District, and a formal case has been registered against him under relevant wildlife protection laws.
Legal Action and Government Response
Speaking on the incident, Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, and assured that the case would be pursued to its full extent.
“Harming wildlife is a serious offense. Anyone found guilty of such acts will face strict legal consequences,” she stated.
“The government remains fully committed to protecting Pakistan’s valuable and endangered species.”
The pangolin, a shy and nocturnal mammal, is a protected species under Pakistani and international wildlife laws. It is often targeted illegally due to myths around its scales, which are falsely believed to have medicinal properties.
Public Reaction and Awareness
The video drew widespread condemnation on social media, with many users calling for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws. Wildlife experts have highlighted the importance of public awareness and responsible behavior toward endangered species.
The Punjab Wildlife Department has urged citizens to report similar incidents and help in protecting Pakistan’s biodiversity.
