Renowned Pakistani actress Madiha Shah has revealed that she once declined a major Bollywood opportunity to star alongside Akshay Kumar in the 1994 blockbuster Mohra, choosing instead to continue her work in Pakistanโs entertainment industry.
The actress shared this during a recent talk show appearance, where she reflected on the defining choices of her career and her commitment to representing her homeland.
Madiha Shah disclosed that she was offered a leading role in Mohra, which went on to become one of the biggest hits of the 1990s, especially remembered for its iconic song โTu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast.โ Explaining her decision, she said, โI was offered to work with Akshay Kumar in Mohra, but I didnโt accept the offer because I wanted to give priority to my own country.โ
She added that while Bollywood has a vast international reach, her dedication to Pakistanโs film and television industry always took precedence. โI have always felt a responsibility to showcase the talent of my nation and contribute to its artistic growth,โ she remarked, underlining her patriotic commitment to local cinema.
The actress also reminisced about the admiration she received from celebrated artists across South Asia. Madiha Shah said that legendary actor Afzaal Ahmed was often moved to tears by her performances.
She also shared that Anil Kapoorโs father, producer Surinder Kapoor, and acclaimed Indian actress Shabana Azmi once watched her stage play Janam Janam Ki Maili Chadar, a performance that left a lasting impression.
โShabana Azmi became emotional after watching my performance and said there is theatre in India too, but this play stands as an example of its own,โ Madiha recalled. She also mentioned that renowned poet Gulzar had expressed a desire to watch the play, which she considers one of the highlights of her career.
