KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Aaliya Soomro, a trailblazing boxer from Lyari, has shown the world that passion and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. Defying social norms and gender stereotypes, Aaliya made headlines by knocking out her Thai opponent in just 45 seconds during an international boxing match in Bangkok — a historic moment for Pakistani women in sports.
Speaking to the media, the 19-year-old champion shared her journey: “I come from a poor family and a remote area, but my determination brought me here. People used to say boxing isn’t for women — I proved them wrong. Girls can do anything.”
Despite her success, Aaliya revealed she received no financial or institutional backing. “No sponsors, no support — I was ignored. But when I was selected, I accepted the challenge,” she said. Her unbeaten streak in professional boxing has now earned her a place in the upcoming Women’s International Boxing Association title match, where she is set to face an Indian contender in Dubai this August.
Aaliya’s love for boxing began at the age of six. “No one stood by me when I started. Now that I’ve won, people are finally with me. I’m grateful for the public and media support,” she said.
To honor her achievements, the Pakistan Association of Press Photographers hosted a ceremony at the Karachi Press Club. The event recognized Aaliya as Pakistan’s first female professional boxer and celebrated her recent international victory. Journalists, photographers, and distinguished guests gathered in the club’s boardroom to pay tribute.
Speakers at the event emphasized the need for increased government and private sector support to nurture Pakistan’s untapped sports talent. Veteran journalist GM Jamali praised Aaliya’s rise from Lyari’s underprivileged streets to global recognition, calling her journey “an extraordinary symbol of women’s empowerment and national pride.”
The ceremony concluded with a presentation of commemorative shields to Aaliya, celebrating her courage, determination, and role as a beacon of hope for aspiring female athletes across Pakistan.
