ISLAMABAD: The new tax imposed on the import of second-hand clothes has made Lunda Bazaars more expensive. The trader community has strongly opposed the government’s decision to impose a Rs. 200 per kilogram tax on imported used clothing. They warned that this move has sharply driven up prices in local markets, particularly at Landa Bazaar.
Traders reported that prices of warm clothes have increased by Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500, making affordable winter wear difficult for low-income and middle-class families. They added that prices were already higher this year due to rising import costs, but they had been striving to keep items within reach of consumers.
Import Costs Push Businesses to the Limit
According to traders, the new duty has significantly raised their import expenses, forcing them to invest more capital in shipments. They explained that the overall cost of goods at the container level has surged, leaving many items beyond the purchasing power of ordinary buyers.
Calls for Government Relief
Business representatives have urged the government to reconsider and reduce the newly imposed tax. They emphasized that a relief measure is crucial to help poor and middle-income citizens buy affordable winter clothing as colder months approach.
