ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Tuesday announced a big 35 percent increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices for the month of April.
The price of an 11.8kg domestic cylinder has jumped by Rs924. It will now cost Rs3,588.60 in April compared to Rs2,664.88 in March.
New Rates for April
Ogra fixed the new consumer price at Rs304.15 per kg. In March, the rate was Rs225.84 per kg. The authority said the sharp rise happened because global LPG prices went up significantly.
The producer price also increased sharply. It now stands at Rs262,817.53 per tonne, up from Rs184,537 per tonne last month. Officials added excise duty, petroleum levy, and 18 percent sales tax to reach the final rate.
For consumers, Ogra included extra charges for marketing, distribution, and transportation. These margins pushed the final price even higher.
Why Prices Rose So Much
Ogra explained that the Saudi Aramco Contract Price increased by 44 percent. The dollar exchange rate saw only a small drop of 0.11 percent. Together, these changes caused the consumer price to rise by Rs923.71 per cylinder.
This equals a 34.66 percent increase overall. The price per kilogram went up by Rs78.28.
The new rates will stay in effect until April 30.
Impact on Households
The hike will hit households hard, especially low-income families who depend on LPG for daily cooking. Many people already struggle with rising fuel costs due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
This is the latest in a series of price increases that have made kitchen fuel more expensive in recent months.
