It is reassuring to note that the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has been reduced to Rs20 per kilogram nationwide. The decline in prices will bring relief to consumers who have been struggling to cope with the increase in living expenses. It is believed that the better availability of LPG has contributed significantly to lowering prices.
Supply improves after border reopening
It is worth noting here that the recent ceasefire along with the end of the Eid and Nowroz holidays in Iran have played a significant role in opening up the supply chain routes. In this regard, nearly 7,000 tonnes of LPG has already been imported into Pakistan via key entry points such as Taftan.
Market pressures and pricing concerns
However, it was not always smooth. Although OGRA had announced that the price of LPG is Rs304 per kilo, there were some reports that traders had charged up to Rs440 to Rs450 per kilo. This was causing much worry amongst the people and regulatory authorities. In fact, Pakistan depends a lot on foreign LPG; almost 65% of their LPG is imported from abroad.
The improved supply and stability in the market have given consumers hope. The most important thing is that the reduced prices give consumers some time to breathe, especially those who use LPG every day for household purposes.
