KARACHI: In a rare medical feat, doctors at Lyari General Hospital in Karachi successfully removed a metal lock from the stomach of a 23-year-old intellectually disabled girl without the need for traditional open surgery.
The patient, a resident of Malir Khokhrapar, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, complaining of severe abdominal pain. After an X-ray revealed a lock lodged in her stomach, the hospital’s surgical team performed an emergency laparoscopic procedure to retrieve the foreign object.
Dr. Anjum Rehman, Chairperson of Lyari General Hospital, confirmed that the girl is now in stable condition and recovering well.
“This was a challenging case due to the object’s size and the patient’s condition, but the team’s quick response and use of laparoscopy made it possible to avoid major surgery,” said Dr. Rehman.
Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, involves inserting a small camera and tools through tiny incisions to perform internal procedures. It reduces the risk of complications, promotes quicker healing, and limits post-operative discomfort compared to conventional surgery.
Free Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed at Hyderabad Civil Hospital
In another noteworthy achievement in public sector healthcare, Hyderabad Civil Hospital successfully conducted its first free tummy tuck surgery.
Dr. Kashan Sheikh and Dr. Roshan Chandio operated on a 55-year-old woman from Matiari who had long suffered from excessive abdominal fat that severely impacted her mobility.
According to Dr. Chandio, the surgery removed 8 kilograms of excess fat, significantly improving the patient’s quality of life. The two-hour procedure was completed without complications, and the patient is currently in stable condition.
Dr. Roshan noted that tummy tuck surgeries are typically only available in a few private hospitals in major cities like Karachi, making this a breakthrough in accessible public healthcare.
