Liza Minnelli is making noise again โ and she wants fans to know exactly how it was made.
The 79-year-old entertainment legend has released a new track titled โKids Wait Till You Hear This,โ marking her first new song in more than a decade. The release coincides with her upcoming memoir of the same name, set to arrive in March.
While Minnelli collaborated with AI voice platform ElevenLabs on elements of the production, she was quick to shut down speculation about artificial vocals. According to Minnelli, the technology helped shape the arrangement โ not her voice.
โHi kids, Iโm happy as a clam, laughing like hell and losing my mind! Itโs all goinโ on at the time,โ Minnelli wrote in a social media post on January 21. She described the track as her first EDM single since her Pet Shop Boys era and praised ElevenLabs as a โsix billion dollar techno behemoth,โ noting actor Matthew McConaughey as an early investor.
Minnelli then drew a firm line in the sand.
โWhat I will not allow this great company to do? Create, clone or copy my voice!โ she wrote. โOn this dance track, โKids Wait Till You Hear This,โ which is a tease for my book, we used AI arrangements. Not AI vocals. A few trolls didnโt bother to read the truth, check with me or my partners. The shout outs are all mine!โ
She wrapped her message with characteristic flair, encouraging fans to โgo listen, enjoy, and shake your pretty buns to the musicโ as she prepares to launch her memoir into the world. Even the promotional image, she added, is current โ โnot retro. Au courant.โ
Minnelli previously explained her decision to work with ElevenLabs in a separate statement, emphasizing creative ownership and emotional authenticity.
โIโve always believed that music is about connection and emotional truth,โ she said. โWhat interested me here was the idea of using my voice and new tools in service of expression, not instead of it.โ
Referencing her legendary parents, Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, she reflected on growing up around creativity that was often owned by others. โElevenLabs makes it possible for anyone to be a creator and owner. That matters,โ she said.
โKids Wait Till You Hear Thisโ is Minnelliโs first new recording since 2013, when she contributed the song โA Love Letter from the Timesโ to the musical television series Smash.
The song shares its title with her forthcoming memoir, which Minnelli says was born out of frustration with how her story has been told in the past.
In an interview with People, Minnelli admitted she long resisted writing a book about her life. โSince I was old enough to put pencil to paper, people asked me to write books about my career,โ she said. โโAbsolutely not! Tell it when Iโm gone!โ was my philosophy.โ
That stance changed after what she described as years of inaccuracies โ including a recent miniseries that, in her view, failed to capture the truth.
โFinally, I was mad as hell,โ Minnelli said. โOver dinner one night, I decided itโs my own story. Iโm gonna share it with you because of all the love youโve given me.โ
