The tribute segment was introduced by host Jack Whitehall, who took a solemn moment to reflect on Payne’s contributions to music and the deep impact he left on his fans and the industry.
Addressing the audience, Whitehall stated, “It is now time to take a moment to remember a very special person who meant so much to the people in this room and to millions around the world.” He recalled the heartbreaking news from the previous October, when the world woke up to the devastating announcement of Payne’s untimely passing.
“He achieved so much in the short time that he was on this earth, and was not only a supremely gifted musician but an incredibly kind soul who touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with,” Whitehall continued. His words resonated with the crowd, many of whom had followed Payne’s journey from his early days in One Direction to his successful solo career.
To honor his memory, the BRITs showcased a moving montage highlighting Payne’s career milestones and personal moments.
The tribute video, set to his emotional cover of the song Little Things, took viewers through his rise to fame, from his breakthrough with One Direction to his achievements as a solo artist.
As a solo performer, Payne made a mark in the industry, earning nominations at the BRIT Awards for his music. In 2018, he was recognized in the categories of British Artist Video of the Year and British Single for his hit song Strip That Down.
The following year, he received another nomination for British Artist Video of the Year for his collaboration with Rita Ora on For You.
