This year’s Bafta Film Awards are shaping up to be a star-studded affair, with Leonardo DiCaprio’s politically charged thriller One Battle After Another leading the field with 14 nominations.
Close behind is the vampire-horror hit Sinners with 13 nominations, while Shakespearean drama Hamnet and table-tennis biopic Marty Supreme each earned 11 nods.
Timothée Chalamet and Jessie Buckley, widely regarded as frontrunners for the Oscars in the lead acting categories, have repeated their nominations at the Baftas. Notably, Chase Infiniti and Paul Mescal, who were absent from the Oscar shortlist, are also recognized this year, highlighting Bafta’s broader range of nominees.
The Baftas include six nomination slots per category, compared with five at the Oscars, and feature additional categories celebrating British talent, such as Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. British films recognized in the shortlists include I Swear, Pillion, H is for Hawk, and The Ballad of Wallis Island.
“It is thrilling to see British indie films and debuts in the company of blockbusters that have taken the world by storm,” said Bafta chair Sara Putt. “We hope the public enjoy watching these films as much as our 8,300 BAFTA film voters have.”
While several films performed strongly, none matched the record of 16 nominations set by Gandhi in 1982.
The ceremony will be hosted by Alan Cumming at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 22 February.
Some actors nominated at the Oscars missed out at the Baftas, including Amy Madigan (Weapons), Delroy Lindo (Sinners), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), and Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value). Meanwhile, actors who were snubbed by the Oscars but earned Bafta recognition include Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) and Odessa A’Zion (Marty Supreme).
The Baftas also feature a stronger representation of British talent, including Robert Aramayo and Peter Mullan (I Swear), Carey Mulligan (The Ballad of Wallis Island), and Emily Watson (Hamnet), alongside Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku, who repeats her Oscar nomination.
