In a tragic incident, a 35-year-old man, identified as Sunil Lohani, set himself on fire in front of his in-law’s residence in Indore city, west-central India.
The horrifying act was reportedly prompted by a dispute with his wife, whom he accused of marrying for the fifth time.
Sunil, the fourth husband of the woman, succumbed to his burns after a 10-day struggle in a city hospital on Friday.
The entire incident was captured by a CCTV camera near his in-laws’ place. Authorities are investigating whether the woman’s purported fifth marriage was the catalyst for Sunil’s drastic action.
According to the police, Sunil, a resident of Dwarkapuri area, left a suicide note explaining that he took such an extreme step due to distress and mental torture inflicted by his wife, Reena, along with an individual named Ashok Sachdeva, Reena’s sisters Sonam Kamra and Baji Kamra, and her brothers Shankar Kamra and Nanhe Kamra.
In the suicide note, Sunil mentioned that his wife had an affair with Ashok, and they were pressuring him to grant her a divorce.
Before the incident, Sunil had also uploaded a video on social media, stating his intention to immolate himself in front of his wife’s house in Katju Colony. He claimed that despite not having divorced his wife, she had remarried Ashok.
On January 4, Sunil visited his wife’s house, and knocked on the door, but received no response. Frustrated, he poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze. Residents intervened, extinguished the flames, and rushed him to the hospital.
Sunil’s brother-in-law, Pradeep, revealed that Reena had married Sunil around five years ago in her third marriage. She later had an affair with Ashok Sachdeva and married him on December 31.
Additionally, the woman had filed a dowry harassment case against Sunil, potentially contributing to his despair and the drastic step he took, as suggested by the police.
